ShandongUniversityisoneoftheoldestandprestigiousuniversitiesinChina.ShandongUniversitywasfoundedin1901andisthesecondnationaluniversityestablishedsoonafterJingshiUniversity(theMetropolitanUniversity)inthecountry.Recently,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheuniversityasa“nationalkeycomprehensiveuniversity.”In2001,itwaslistedamongthe21nationalkeyconstructionfirst-classuniversitiesbytheMinistryofEducation.
SituatedinJinan,capitalcityofShandongProvince,ShandongUniversitycoversanareaof3.849squarekilometers.TheprovinceislocatedontheeastcoastalpartofChinaandthelowerreachofYellowRiver.NotonlyisitoneofthemosteconomicallydevelopedcoastalprovincesinChina,butalsoamajorcontributortotheancientChineseculture—theauspiciousbirthplaceofQiluculture.
ShandongUniversityconsistsof31schools/collegesandagraduateschool.Coursesareofferedin11mainacademicdisciplines:philosophy,economics,law,literature,history,naturalsciences,engineering,management,medicine,educationandmilitary.Thereare104undergraduatedegreeprograms,209masterdegreeprograms,127doctoraldegreeprograms,and15post-doctoratemobilestations.Inaddition,thereare7professionalmaster'sdegreeprogramsinlaw,businessmanagement,engineering,clinicalmedicine,publichealth,dentistryandpublicadministrationrespectively.Thestudentpopulationtotalstoabout95,000,ofwhich40,978arefulltimestudents,10,755arepostgraduatestudents,andover1,000areinternationalstudents.
ShandongUniversityembracesanabundanceofscientificresearchfacilities,astrongteachingstaff,andfavorablestudyingenvironment.Attheuniversity,thereexist35national,provincial,andministerialkeyacademicdisciplines;2nationalkeyresearchlabs;20provincialandministerialkeyresearchlabs;anationalengineeringandtechnologypromotioncenter;19provincialtechnologyresearchcenters;4nationalbasicscientificresearchandpersonneldevelopmentbases;4socialsciencekeyresearchbasesapprovedbyMinistryofEducation;and4nationalfundamentalsciencepersonneldevelopmentbases.Theuniversityalsohasagroupofreputedscholarsknownhomeandabroad,ofwhich922areprofessors.Thereare29academicians(includingadjunctacademicians)whoaremembersoftheChineseAcademyofSciencesandtheChineseAcademyofEngineering.Threegeneralhospitals,includingQiluHospitaland12teachinghospitalsareaffiliatedwiththeuniversity.Over175experimentallabs,teachingandresearchfacilitiesarewell-equipped.Theuniversitylibraryhousesacollectionofabout5,600,000volumes.
ShandongUniversityisahigherlearninginstitutionopentotheworld.Overtheyears,ShandongUniversityhasestablishedabroadinternationalnetworkforeducationalcooperationandhassignedexchangeagreementswithover70universitiesfromover50countries.Theuniversityremainsactiveinacademiccooperationandexchangeswithover100educationalandresearchinstitutionsworldwide.Theuniversitybecomesanimportanteducationbaseforinternationalstudents.Since1980,ShandongUniversityhasreceivedover10,000studentsfromover60countries.
