ThenatureofarthasbeendescribedbyRichardWollheimas"oneofthemostelusiveofthetraditionalproblemsofhumanculture".Ithasbeendefinedasavehiclefortheexpressionorcommunicationofemotionsandideas,ameansforexploringandappreciatingformalelementsfortheirownsake,andasmimesisorrepresentation.LeoTolstoyidentifiedartasauseofindirectmeanstocommunicatefromonepersontoanother.BenedettoCroceandR.G.Collingwoodadvancedtheidealistviewthatartexpressesemotions,andthattheworkofartthereforeessentiallyexistsinthemindofthecreator.ThetheoryofartasformhasitsrootsinthephilosophyofImmanuelKant,andwasdevelopedintheearlytwentiethcenturybyRogerFryandCliveBell.ArtasmimesisorrepresentationhasdeeprootsinthephilosophyofAristotle.Morerecently,thinkersinfluencedbyMartinHeideggerhaveinterpretedartasthemeansbywhichacommunitydevelopsforitselfamediumforself-expressionandinterpretation.
