Accordingtothestatisticsfromthepublisherof“science”inAug5th2011,financialincentivesandthenumberofinternationalpublicationshaveaverystrongpositivecorrelation.Further,financialawardisoneofthemostsignificantincentivesamongall.Thisfindingisverysensibleandacceptableaccordingtotherealfact,whichisthattheimageoftheuniversityisbuiltbytheirstudents,andthewaywemeasuregoodPhDstudentlargelycomestotalkabout‘howmanyinternationalpublicationsastudentpublished’.Forstudentsandprofessorsthemselves,promotionforbothstudentsanduniversityprofessorsishighlyreliedonrecordsof‘howmanyinternationalthesispublishedoninternationallevel’.ThisishappeningnotonlyinChinainfact,butalsoinmanydevelopedcountries,e.g.U.S.AandCanada.Further,highlyproductiveprofessors/PhDstudentshavehigherchanceofbeingpoachedbyamorefamousuniversity,academicinstitutesand/ororganizations.So,economicincentivescreateawin-winpositionbothfortheuniversitiesandtheirPhDstudents.AccordingtoTaylor’stheory,allpeopleinthissocietyare‘economicmen’,whichimpliesthatallpeoplelikemoney,andthebestincentivesforthemtodosomethingisfinancialincentive.So,thismethodmakes,firstly,student‘happytodoit’;secondly,itmaysupportthosestudentswhoneedmoneytoconductaresearch.Finally,monetaryrewardisasignalof‘thankfulness’and‘acceptanceofhardwork’,somanypeoplearekeenonandverysupportiveinissuingfinancialincentivesforPhDstudents’publications.
