RobertFrost(1874--1963)wasborninSanFrancisco,California.Hisfather,ajournalistandlocalpolitician,diedwhenFrostwasaboutelevenyearsold.HisScottishmotherpickeduphercareerasaschoolteachertosupportherfamily.ThefamilylivedinLawrence,Massachusetts,withFrost'sgrandfather,WilliamPrescottFrost,whogavehisgrandsongoodschooling.In1892FrostgranuatedfromahighschoolandattendedDarthmouthCollegeforafewmonths.Overthenexttenyerasheheldanumberofjobs,workinginatextilemillandteachingLatinathismother'sschool.In1894theNewYorkIndependentpublishedFrost'spoemMyButterfly.
From1897to1899FroststudiedatHarvardUniversity,butleftwithoutreceivingadegree.WhenhesenthispoemstotheAtlanticMonthlytheywerereturnedwiththisnote,"WeregretthattheAtlantichasnoplaceforyourwonderfulpoems."
In1912FrostwenttoEngland.Therehepublishedhisferstcollectionofpoems,ABoy'sWill,attheageof39.ItwasfollowedbyNorthBoston(1914),whichgainedinternationalreputation.ThecollectioncontainsoneofFrost'sbest--knownpoems,MendingWall.
Asafour--timewinnerofthePulitzerPrize,Frostdidnotreceivetheserecognitionsuntilhislateryearswhenhispoeticbrilliancewasfinallyrecognized.
