ThestudyreportedintheJournalSleepdoesnotprovethattoolittleortoomuchsleepdirectlyleadstoexcessfatgain.Butthefindingssupportandextendthoseofotherstudieslinkingsleepduration-particularlyalackofsleep-toweightgainandeventohigherrisksofdiabetes(糖尿病)andheartdisease.Amongparticipantsyoungerthan40thestudyfoundthosewhosaidtheysleptforfivehoursorlesseachnightgainedmorebellyfatthanthosewhoaveragedsixorsevenhoursofsleep.Onaverageshortsleepersshoweda32percentgaininvisceral(内脏的)fatversusa13percentgainamongthosewhosleptsixorsevenhourspernightanda22percentincreaseamongmenandwomenwhogotatleasteighthoursofsleepeachnight.Asimilarpatternwasseenwithsuperficialabdominal(腹部)fat.
ThefindingsaccordingtoleadresearcherDr.KristenG.Hairstonsupportthebeliefthatsleephabitsaffectweightandhealthingeneral.“Sleepisanimportantpartofyouroverallhealth-notjustinwhetheryou'retiredduringtheday”shesaid.
Theremaybeindirecteffects;peoplewhogettoolittlesleepmaybetootiredduringthedaytoexercisewhilethosewhospendalotoftimeinbedmayspendlesstimebeingactiverelativetopeoplewhosleepfewerhours.Researchalsosuggeststhatsleeplossalterspeople'slevelsofappetite-regulatinghormones(荷尔蒙)-whichcouldintheorycausethemtoovereat.Depressionwhichoftenaffectspeople'ssleepandhasbeenlinkedtoweightgaincouldalsobeafactorHairstonnoted.
