TheWhiteHouseistheofficialhomeandprincipalworkplaceofthePresidentoftheUnitedStates.Builtbetween1792and1800ofwhite-paintedAquiasandstoneinthelateGeorgianstyle,ithasbeentheexecutiveresidenceofeveryU.S.PresidentsinceJohnAdams.WhenThomasJeffersonmovedintothehomein1801,he,witharchitectBenjaminHenryLatrobeexpandedthebuildingoutward,creatingtwocolonnadeswhichweremeanttoconcealstablesandstorage.[1]

　　In1814,duringtheWarof1812,themansionwassetablazebytheBritishArmyintheBurningofWashington,destroyingtheinteriorandcharringmuchoftheexteriorwalls.ReconstructionbeganalmostimmediatelyandPresidentJamesMonroemovedintothepartiallyreconstructedhouseinOctober1817.ConstructioncontinuedwiththeadditionoftheSouthPorticoin1824andtheNorthin1829.Duetocrowdingwithintheexecutivemansionitself,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelthadnearlyallworkofficesrelocatedtothenewly-constructedWestWingin1901.Eightyearslater,PresidentWilliamHowardTaftexpandedtheWestWingandcreatedthefirstOvalOfficewhichwaseventuallymovedasthesectionwasexpanded.Thethird-flooratticwasconvertedtolivingquartersin1927byaugmentingtheexistinghiproofwithlongsheddormers.AnewlyconstructedEastWingwasusedasareceptionareaforsocialevents;bothnewwingswereconnectedbyJefferson'scolonnades.EastWingalterationswerecompletedin1946creatingadditionalofficespace.By1948,thehouse'sload-bearingexteriorwallsandinternalwoodbeamswerefoundtobeclosetofailure.UnderHarryS.Truman,theinteriorroomswerecompletelydismantled,resultingintheconstructionofanewinternalload-bearingsteelframeworkandthereassemblyoftheinteriorrooms.

　　Today,theWhiteHouseComplexincludestheExecutiveResidence(wheretheFirstFamilyresides),theWestWing(thelocationoftheOvalOffice,CabinetRoom,andRooseveltRoom),andtheEastWing(thelocationoftheofficeoftheFirstLadyandWhiteHouseSocialSecretary),aswellastheOldExecutiveOfficeBuilding,whichhousestheexecutiveofficesofthePresidentandVicePresident.

　　TheWhiteHouseismadeupofsixstories—theGroundFloor,StateFloor,SecondFloor,andThirdFloor,aswellasatwo-storybasement.Itislocatedat1600PennsylvaniaAvenueNWinWashington,D.C.AstheExecutiveOfficeofthePresidentoftheUnitedStates,theterm"WhiteHouse"isregularlyusedasametonymfortheExecutiveOfficeofthePresidentoftheUnitedStatesandforthepresident'sadministrationandadvisorsingeneral.ThepropertyisownedbytheNationalParkServiceandispartofthePresident'sPark.In2007,itwasrankedsecondontheAmericanInstituteofArchitects's"ListofAmerica'sFavoriteArchitecture."
