Prokaryoticsequences,aGA-richmicrosatellite,
retroelementremnants,andatandemrepeatarrayarethe
primaryelementscorrelatedsofarwithsilencing.MARs
havebeenassociatedwithsomestablyexpressedinserts
[26··].InworkonplantspeciesotherthanNicotiana,
highlyrepetitivesequenceshavebeenfoundadjacentto
anunstabletransgeneinpetunia[24].Molecularanalysis
ofthreeintegrationsitestructuresinricetransformedby
directgenetransferindicatedacommonAT-richrepetitive
sequenceandtelomericrepeatsatallthreejunctionsofthe
targetgenome[27].AdditionalstudiesonDNAsequences
flankingtransgeneinsertsarerequiredtosubstantiatethe
currentviewthatcertainrepeatsorprokaryoticsequences
tendtobeassociatedwithpoorlyexpressedorsilenced
inserts.
