  Ihadn’treallyplannedonpickingupJaneEyrewhenIbeganthechallenge,butI’msoincrediblygladIdid.I’mconstantlysurprisedathowreadableandaccessibletheclassicsI’vebeenreadingare;ithascertainlychangedmyperceptionofthem.Ifyou’vebeenfollowingmeonGoodreads,you’llknowthatI’vebeenravingaboutthisbookandexclaiminghowsurprisedIwastobeenjoyingit.

  Iseparatedthenovelintothreeparts:Jane’schildhood,hertimeatThornfieldHall,and‘after’.Ireallylovedthefirsttwopartsofthenovel:findingoutwhoJaneis,howherunhappychildhoodandneglectshapedher,keyincidentsinherlifethatshe’llneverforget,andthenthosepeoplewhoshowedrarekindness.

  JaneEyreisafantasticcharacter–independent,honest,bluntanddignified.Eventhoughthebookwaswrittenover160yearsago,andI’dexpectwomentobecomplacentandsubmissive(andformentotreatthemthatway),Janeisanythingbut.(‘Iamnobird;andnonetensnaresme;Iamafreehumanbeingwithanindependentwill,whichInowexerttoleaveyou.’).Iwasrootingforheralltheway,yetdevastatingthingskepthappeningtoher,andIwonderedifshe’devergettobehappy.MrRochesterisalsooneofthemostinterestingcharactersI’vecomeacrossinanovel.I’mnotsureifIeverreallylikedhim—heiscomplicated,moodyandsometimespatronisingandbelittling—butIfoundhimutterlyfascinating.Ienjoyedhiswitty,quickbanterwithJane!Theunconventionalromancebetweenthemwasalsoenjoyable,eventhoughIknewwhatwascoming.Inoneway,JaneEyreisasimple,straightforwardstorybutinotherwaysit’scompletelymadanddramatic.IthinkthiscontrastwaswhyIwassoabsorbedandfixatedwiththestory.

  Thebeautiful,magnificentwritingwasalsooneofmyfavouritethingsaboutJaneEyre.It’sjustperfect;soeloquentyetnotoverdone(‘Prejudices,itiswellknown,aremostdifficulttoeradicatefromtheheartwhosesoilhasneverbeenloosenedorfertilisedbyeducation’).Iadmiredthecharactersandtheirsuperiorvocabulary,andthewaythatJaneaddressesthereader.It’ssodifferent—morecomplex—fromthewritingstyleIusuallycomeacross,butsoeasytoread,somethingI’mconstantlysurprisedtoencounter.

  Unfortunately,Ididn’tenjoythe‘after’asmuchasIhadexpectedto.I’mnotsurewhetheritwasbecauseIhadbeenreadingthebookforlongerthanIusuallywouldanditstartedtomakemefidgety,orwhetherIjustdidn’tfindthesituationasinteresting,butitdrewmebacktowardstheend.It’sthereasonwhyIcouldn’tgivethebookthefullfivestar‘Ilovedit’rating,althoughIdesperatelywantedto.I’mhopingthatI’llappreciateitmorewhenIre-readitsomeday,andithasstillmadeittomy‘favourites’.

  JaneEyrewasasurprisingnoveltomeineverywayandIadoredit.
