Everyafternoon,asthechildrenwerecomingbackfromschool,theyusedtogoandplayinthegiant'sgarden.
Itwasabeautifullargegarden.Beautifulflowersgrewinthegrass.Thereweretwelvefruittrees.Inthespringthefruittreeswerecoveredwithredandwhiteflowers,andlaterintheyeartheyborerichfruit.Thebirdssanginthetreessosweetlythatsometimesthechildrenstoppedtheirgamesandlistenedtothem."Howhappywearehere!"theycriedtoeachother.
Onedaythegiantcameback.Hehadbeenawayforsevenyears.Whenhearrived,hesawthechildrenplayinginhisgarden."Whatareyoudoinghere?"hecriedinaveryloudvoice.Thechildrenranaway.
"Myowngardenismyowngarden,"saidthegiant."Iwillallownoonetoplayinitbutmyself."Sohebuiltahighwallrounditandputupanotice:Keepout.Hewasaveryselfishgiant.
Sothechildrenhadnowheretoplay.Theytriedtoplayontheroad,buttheroadwasdustyandfullofhardstone,andtheydidnotlikeit.Theywanderedroundthehighwallswhentheirlessonswerefinishedandtalkedaboutthebeautifulgardeninside."Howhappywewerethere!"theysaidtoeachother.
Thespringcame,andtherewereflowersandlittlebirdsalloverthecountry.ButinthegardenoftheSelfishGiantitwastillwinterthebirdsdidnotliketosinginitbecausetherewerenochildren,andthetreesforgottobearflowers.Snowcoveredupthegrass,andicecoveredallthetreeswithsilver.Thenorthwindcame,anddrivingrain.
"Ican'tunderstandwhythespringissolateincoming,"saidtheSelfishGiantashesatatthewindowofhishouseandlookedoutathiscoldwhitegarden."Ihopethattherewillbeachangeintheweather."
Butthespringnevercame,northesummer.Whentherewasgoldenfruitineveryothergarden,therewasnofruitinthethegiant'sgarden.Itwasalwayswintertherewiththenorthwind,andsnow,andice,anddrivingrain.
Thegiantwaslyinginbedonemorningwhenheheardsomebeautifulmusic.Itwasalittlebirdsingingoutsidehiswindow.Itwassolongsincehehadheardthesongofabirdthatitseemedtohimthemostbeautifulmusicintheworld.Thenthenorthwindandtherainstopped.
"Ibelievethatspringhascomeatlast!"saidthegiant.Hejumpedoutofbedandlookedout.

Hesawamostwonderfulsight.Thechildrenhadcomeinthoughaholeinthewallandweresittinginthebranchesofthetrees.Therewasalittlechildineverytreethathecouldsee.Thetreesweresogladtohavethechildrenbackthattheyhadcoveredthemselveswithflowers:thebirdswereflyingaboutandsingingwithjoy,andflowerswerelookingupthroughthegreengrass.
Alittleboywasstandinginthefarthestcornerofthegarden.Hewassosmallthathecouldnotreachuptothebranchesofthetree,butwaswanderingrounditandweeping.Thattreewasstillcoveredwithiceandsnow.
"HowselfishIhavebeen!"saidthegiant."NowIknowwhythespringwouldnotcomehere.I'llputthelittleboyonthetopofthetree.ThenI'llpulldownthewallandmygardenshallbeachildren'splaygroundforever."Hewasreallysorryforwhathehaddone.
