　　Themunicipalitywascreatedon14March1997,succeedingthesub-provincialcityadministrationthatwaspartofSichuanprovince.AsofNovember2010,themunicipalityhadapopulationof28,846,200,[1]althoughtheurbanizedareaisestimatedtohaveapopulationofonly6or7million.[2]Themunicipalityhasjurisdictionover19districts,15counties,and4autonomouscounties.Withanareaof82,401squarekilometres(31,815sqmi),itisthelargestdirect-controlledmunicipality,largereventhanoneprovinceandanautonomousregion.Itispossiblytheworld'slargestmunicipalitybypopulationandoneofthelargestbyarea.

　　Theofficialabbreviation,wasapprovedbytheStateCouncilon18April1997.ChongqingwasalsoamunicipalityoftheRepublicofChinaadministration,servingasitswartimecapitalduringtheSecondSino-JapaneseWar(1937–1945).ItsabbreviatednameisderivedfromtheoldnameofapartoftheJialingRiverthatrunsthroughChongqingandfeedstheYangtzeRiver.

　　ChongqingisoneofthemostnotablecitiesforhistoryandcultureinChinaandservesastheeconomiccentreoftheupstreamYangtzearea.ItisthemajormanufacturingcentreandatransportationhubforSouthwestChina.
