TheU.S.DepartmentofLaborstatistics(统计)showthatthereisanoversupplyofcollegetrainedworkersandthatthisoversupplyisincreasing.Alreadytherehavebeenmorethanenoughteachersengineersphysicistsaerospaceexpertsandotherspecialists.Yetcollegesandgraduateschoolscontinueeveryyeartoturnouthighlytrainedpeopletocompeteforjobsthataren’tthere.Theresultisthatgraduatescannotentertheprofessionsforwhichtheyweretrainedandmusttaketemporaryjobswhichdonotrequireacollegedegree.
Ontheotherhandthereisagreatneedforskilledworkersofallsorts:carpenterselectriciansmechanicsplumbersTVrepairmen.Thesepeoplehavemoreworkthantheycandealwithandtheirannualincomesareoftenhigherthanthoseofcollegegraduates.Theoldgapthatwhite-collarworkersmakeabetterlivingthanbluecollarworkersnolongerholdstrue.Thelawofsupplyanddemandnowfavorstheskilledworkmen.
Thereasonforthissituationisthetraditionalmyththatcollegedegreeisapassporttoaprosperousfuture.AlargepartofAmericansocietymatchessuccessinlifeequallywithacollegedegree.Parentsbeginindoctrinating(灌输)theirchildrenwiththismythbeforetheyareoutofgradeschool.Highschoolteachersplaytheirpartbyactingasifhighschooleducationwereapreparationforcollegeratherthanforlife.Underthispressurethekidsfallinline.Whethertheywanttogotocollegeornotdoesn’tmatter.
Everybodyshouldgotocollegesoofcoursetheymustgo.Andeveryyearcollegeenrollments(入学)goupandupandmoreandmoregraduatesareovereducatedforthekindsofjobsavailabletothem.
Oneresultofthisemphasisonacollegeeducationisthatmanypeoplegotocollegewhodonotbelongthere.Ofthesixtypercentofhighschoolgraduateswhoentercollegehalfofthemdonotgraduatewiththeirclass.Manyofthemdropoutwithinthefirstyear.Somestruggleonfortwoorthreeyearsandthengiveup.
